I wonder if the rise in men’s eating disorders is connected to their decline in economic power— 75% of the jobs lost in the Recession were men’s, and men in general are increasingly destabilized in their role as primary income-earners. It would make sense that eating disorders—as a tool to try to gain control over one’s life—would increase in frequency.
In other news, the original GQ article lacks any subtlety, especially in over-emphasizing “pursuit of perfection” as the primary motivation behind this phenomenon.
